Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has been granted an order to take control of the assets of former PRASA boss, Lucky Montana, over his R55 million tax debt.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Pretoria High Court granted SARS a sequestration order against Montana\u2019s estate.<\/p>\n

Montana has been embroiled in a public spat with the revenue service, accusing it of fraud, with the entity responding in an unprecedented move of publicly disclosing his tax affairs.<\/p>\n

In its sequestration application, SARS raised a number of red flags in Montana\u2019s tax affairs.<\/p>\n

It found undeclared income and the unexplained purchases of luxury cars and properties.<\/p>\n

Montana recently held a media briefing responding to SARS, where he maintained that he was being targeted for political reasons.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m at peace with myself and I do not owe SARS a cent. I want to repeat that: I do not owe SARS a cent.”<\/p>\n

The sequestration order places in jeopardy Montana’s political career as a member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.<\/p>\n

Section 47 (1) of the Constitution disqualifies unrehabilitated insolvent people from being members of the National Assembly.<\/p>\n
