{"id":91749,"date":"2025-10-19T16:44:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T16:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/south-africa-approves-controversial-r2-23-trillion-energy-plan"},"modified":"2025-10-19T16:58:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T16:58:58","slug":"south-africa-approves-controversial-r2-23-trillion-energy-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/south-africa-approves-controversial-r2-23-trillion-energy-plan","title":{"rendered":"South Africa Approves Controversial R2.23 Trillion Energy Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>South Africa intends to revive a controversial modular nuclear reactor program and step up its reliance on gas to generate electricity, according to a new energy-policy blueprint unveiled by the nation\u2019s electricity and energy minister.<\/p>\n<p>A revised Integrated Resource Plan approved by the cabinet last week envisions R2.23 trillion being invested in energy infrastructure by 2042, with nuclear and gas accounting for 16% of total generation capacity in the next 14 years compared to 3% currently, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Dependence on coal will drop to 27% in that same period, from 58%, he said.<\/p>\n<p>This is \u201cthe single biggest investment program of the post-apartheid era,\u201d and will ensure that \u201cwe\u2019re able to achieve energy security,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The most-industrialized nation on the continent, South Africa relies on coal to generate the bulk of its electricity and had suffered from rotational blackouts for decades before they began easing last year.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is using the IRP to map out how the country will meet energy demand while still limiting emissions to achieve so-called net-zero electricity generation by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlobally, there\u2019s a trend of going nuclear,\u201d Ramokgopa said. \u201cFourteen of the world\u2019s top financing institutions have committed, that indeed, they\u2019re going to finance nuclear going into the future.
