{"id":92485,"date":"2025-11-06T13:17:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T13:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/samwu-softens-stance-after-tshwanes-backpay-decision"},"modified":"2025-11-06T13:28:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T13:28:37","slug":"samwu-softens-stance-after-tshwanes-backpay-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/samwu-softens-stance-after-tshwanes-backpay-decision","title":{"rendered":"SAMWU Softens Stance After Tshwane&#8217;s Backpay Decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>After threatening to make the City of Tshwane ungovernable for the G20 Summit, the South African Municipal Workers&#8217; Union (SAMWU) has softened its tongue following the city\u2019s decision to backpay its employees three years\u2019 worth of salary increases.<\/p>\n<p>The South African Local Bargaining Council (SALBC) recently ordered the municipality to implement a 3.5% salary increase for over 20,000 of the city\u2019s workers.<\/p>\n<p>The salary bumps date back to the 2021\/2022 financial year, with estimates saying the backpay alone will set the city back by about R2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition parties have criticised the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition government for not taking the bargaining council\u2019 judgment on review, saying this jeopardises the city\u2019s financial standing.<\/p>\n<p>SAMWU&#8217;s regional secretary, Donald Monakis, has praised the current administration for choosing to honour the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook man, to be fair, salary and wages aside, this administration, since they came in, the door is always open.
