{"id":94898,"date":"2026-01-05T18:26:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T18:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/western-cape-hospitals-strain-from-74000-emergency-admissions"},"modified":"2026-01-05T18:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T18:41:17","slug":"western-cape-hospitals-strain-from-74000-emergency-admissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/western-cape-hospitals-strain-from-74000-emergency-admissions","title":{"rendered":"Western Cape Hospitals Strain from 74,000 Emergency Admissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The Western Cape health and wellness department said it&#8217;s hospitals and emergency centres are experiencing significant pressure this festive season.<\/p>\n<p>Since December last year to the 2nd of January, the province&#8217;s emergency centres made more than 74,300 admissions.<\/p>\n<p>These included 18,600 trauma cases and 52,200 medical admissions.<\/p>\n<p>Chief operating officer for the Western Cape department of health and wellness department Doctor Saadiq Kariem said &#8220;our emergency centres were also extremely busy during New Year&#8217;s Day with 3989 admissions which included 1378 trauma cases and 2464 medical admissions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Department head Doctor Keith Cloete has urged the public only to visit emergency centres for actual emergencies and to expect extended waiting times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are service pressures across all of our hospitals and emergency centres since New Year\u2019s Eve and the festive season.
