{"id":95070,"date":"2026-01-31T19:30:47","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T19:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/mbeki-zuma-fail-to-recuse-justice-khampepe-from-trc"},"modified":"2026-01-31T19:51:04","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T19:51:04","slug":"mbeki-zuma-fail-to-recuse-justice-khampepe-from-trc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/mbeki-zuma-fail-to-recuse-justice-khampepe-from-trc","title":{"rendered":"Mbeki Zuma Fail to Recuse Justice Khampepe from TRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The recusal application by former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma for the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases inquiry has been dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>Both Zuma and Mbeki wanted retired Justice Sisi Khampepe to recuse herself citing bias on her part.<\/p>\n<p>The commission is investigating alleged interference and concerted efforts to stop the prosecution of cases referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) by the TRC.<\/p>\n<p>This ruling means that both Mbeki and Zuma will have to testify before Khampepe in the commission of inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Khampepe has given three reasons for her decision to dismiss the recusal applications by the former presidents.<\/p>\n<p>She cited that they delayed unreasonably and failed to provide proper explanations.<\/p>\n<p>Khampepe also dismissed arguments by Zuma that she made adverse findings against him in the Constitutional Court which resulted in his arrest in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Khampepe said that there was also no explanation given by Mbeki for his delay in bringing a recusal application saying it seems that if Zuma did not apply Mbeki would not be seeking her recusal.<\/p>\n<p>The retired justice said that the time bound nature of the commission\u2019s work dictates that it must continue uninterrupted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">South-Africa<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa.
