{"id":95348,"date":"2026-02-05T11:11:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T11:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/cape-town-water-outlook-rated-four-out-of-ten"},"modified":"2026-02-05T11:30:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T11:30:11","slug":"cape-town-water-outlook-rated-four-out-of-ten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/cape-town-water-outlook-rated-four-out-of-ten","title":{"rendered":"Cape Town Water Outlook Rated Four Out of Ten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Town\u2019s immediate water outlook has been rated four out of 10, despite dam levels sitting at around 60%.<\/p>\n<p>Zahid Badroodien, MMC for Water and Sanitation at the City of Cape Town, said they\u2019re not yet in crisis territory but warned that high water usage remained a concern.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dams are in the green, but usage is too high<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Badroodien said the City\u2019s assessment was based on dam levels and projected rainfall, as well as engagements with the Western Cape government.<\/p>\n<p>He said provincial authorities recently confirmed that the metro should have sufficient water heading into winter, potentially keeping it out of a \u2018red zone\u2019 scenario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with the provincial government\u2019s own determination, we\u2019re still very much in the green space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, he acknowledged that water consumption trends were worrying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re well above our allocated usage, which is provided to us by DWS,\u201d he said, adding that about 70% of the city\u2019s water is used by households.<\/p>\n<p>He urged residents to cut their household consumption by at least 10%, saying this alone would bring the city back under its target and help prolong dam supplies.<\/p>\n<p><b>November \u2018too late\u2019 for restrictions?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Longer-term forecasts suggest the Western Cape could receive below-average rainfall this winter, although confidence in such projections remains limited.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers have reportedly advised that if conditions do not improve, water restrictions may be introduced by 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>But Badroodien conceded that waiting until then could be risky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are going to safeguard the remaining water supply, we must make a decision much earlier than November,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He indicated that the city would reassess the situation in June or July, when rainfall patterns become clearer, and could implement restrictions sooner if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaiting until November is simply something that cannot happen if these scientists and modelling trends are showing us that this decision must be made much earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Augmentation only from 2031<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The first large-scale water augmentation projects are only expected to come online in 2031.<\/p>\n<p>That means Cape Town must manage demand over the next five years largely through conservation and behaviour change.<\/p>\n<p>Since November, the City has run awareness campaigns encouraging voluntary reductions in water use.
