{"id":95627,"date":"2026-02-10T16:24:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T16:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/madlanga-commission-behari-admits-to-false-statements"},"modified":"2026-02-10T16:34:33","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T16:34:33","slug":"madlanga-commission-behari-admits-to-false-statements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/madlanga-commission-behari-admits-to-false-statements","title":{"rendered":"Madlanga Commission Behari Admits to False Statements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>One of main allegations levelled against suspended Ekurhuleni legal head Kemi Behari is that he was part of a clique of senior municipal officials who protected EMPD\u2019s Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi from accountability.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Ekurhuleni\u2019s suspended head of legal &#8211; Kemi Behari &#8211; has conceded to making \u201cfalse\u201d statements to the Madlanga Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Behari initially submitted a statement to the commission, saying the municipality never intended to challenge the findings of police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) regarding its investigation into the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD)\u2019s Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, IPID found Mkhwanazi entered the municipality into an irregular contract with companies linked to suspected crime boss Vusimuzi &#8220;Cat&#8221; Matlala.<\/p>\n<p>One of main allegations levelled against Behari is that he was part of a clique of senior municipal officials who protected Mkhwanazi from accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Following IPID\u2019s damning report on Mkhwanazi, Behari drafted a response letter to the entity &#8211; which disputed its findings of fraud and corruption against Mkhwanazi.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement submitted to the Madlanga Commission, Behari said he never intended to send the draft letter to IPID and it was an internal document.<\/p>\n<p>However, the commission\u2019s evidence leader &#8211; Lee Segeels-Ncube &#8211; presented an email trail on Tuesday morning showing Behari sent the letter to the MMC for Community Safety to attach their letter head, sign and send it to IPID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s make this concession and say okay, it was contrary to that, it was false in terms of what I said in the 184 (paragraph 184 of his statement to the commission).
