{"id":95712,"date":"2026-02-11T14:29:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T14:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/mk-party-views-sona-as-a-performative-political-exercise"},"modified":"2026-02-11T14:42:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T14:42:59","slug":"mk-party-views-sona-as-a-performative-political-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/mk-party-views-sona-as-a-performative-political-exercise","title":{"rendered":"MK Party views SONA as a performative political exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party views the State of the Nation Address (SONA) as a performative political exercise, rather than a true reflection of the state of the country<\/p>\n<p>Interim parliamentary leader Des van Rooyen said his party is not holding its breath that this year\u2019s address will be much different from any of the previous ones delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n<p>It will be the second SONA that Ramaphosa will deliver on behalf of the Government of National Unity (GNU), and in which he will have to recognise the work done by ministers from other political parties.<\/p>\n<p>The MK Party added that SONA has ceased to function as a credible instrument of national planning, accountability or state coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Van Rooyen expects Ramaphosa to, once again, make much of Operation Vulindlela when he delivers the SONA.<\/p>\n<p>This is the government\u2019s reform programme to get State-owned entities to function optimally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can tell you now. That Vulindlela was not meant for our people, because our people are still unemployed, and if there\u2019s any changes in the unemployment figures, they are close to nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Rooyen said the government\u2019s developmental agenda remains reliant on apartheid-era infrastructure and is failing to create much-needed employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNational Treasury is not moving an inch to do away with austerity funding.
