Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The United States’ diplomatic presence in South Africa entered a new chapter on Monday as Ambassador-designate Leo Brent Bozell III officially submitted copies of his letters of credence to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.<\/p>\n

The submission marks the formal start of Bozell\u2019s tenure, allowing him to begin his duties as the top US diplomat in the country. The position has remained vacant for over a year following the resignation of Reuben Brigety, who stepped down at the conclusion of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n

Bozell\u2019s nomination by President Trump last year drew significant scrutiny due to his historical record. Critics have pointed to his stance in the 1980s, during which he opposed negotiations with then-political prisoner Nelson Mandela to end the apartheid regime.<\/p>\n

These historical positions prompted the anti-apartheid movement to call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to reject Bozell’s credentials.<\/p>\n

Despite these objections, the administrative process moved forward today as the Acting Chief of State Protocol, Clayson Monyela, received Bozell and accepted the letters of credence.<\/p>\n

Department spokesperson Nelson Kgwete confirmed that Bozell is now considered duly accredited and is authorised to assume his official duties. While he has begun his work, Bozell is still expected to present his original letters of credence to President Ramaphosa at a future formal ceremony.<\/p>\n

Bozell, known as the founder of the Media Research Center, has already signalled a firm diplomatic stance. During his Senate committee interview last year, he stated that he would actively try to dissuade South Africa from continuing its genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n

While the US has now filled its vacancy in Pretoria, South Africa has yet to appoint a new ambassador to the United States.<\/p>\n
