Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The Freedom Front Plus has said its recent merger with the Referendum Party does not mean it will start advocating for the independence of the Western Cape.<\/p>\n

Rather FF Plus leader Corne Mulder said the merger helps to clean-up the political terrain of more than 500 registered parties ahead of the next elections.<\/p>\n

The Referendum Party was a single-issue party founded in 2023 with the sole purpose of pushing for a referendum for Cape independence \u2013 which Premier Alan Winde refused to accede to.<\/p>\n

Mulder said while his party supports the right to self-determination, ceding the Cape is not one of its guiding principles.<\/p>\n

The FF Plus said it was approached by the Referendum Party to merge.<\/p>\n

The merger will see the party officially being deregistered as a functioning political party and the FF Plus will take over its database of some 8000 supporters who have the choice of signing up with the FF Plus.<\/p>\n

FF Plus leader Corne Mulder added the merger does not include the Cape Independence Advocacy Group which gave rise to the Referendum Party.<\/p>\n

“People that are involved with the Cape Independence Advocacy Group will continue with the advocacy work as a civic group, but that stands outside and is not connected to the party, from our side,” said Mulder.<\/p>\n

“We accommodate the ideals in terms of where we are, but as a national party operating throughout South Africa, we are committed to accommodate our constituents throughout,” Mulder said.<\/p>\n

Mulder added the Referendum Party\u2019s former leaders will not assume any leadership positions within FF Plus and will have to participate and compete through the branches if they desire to take on such roles.<\/p>\n
