The incident, widely shared on social media, shows the aftermath of a suspected criminal being shot and killed after fleeing a crime scene.<\/p>\n

\u2018This has become the norm\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

A member of Parliament\u2019s Portfolio Committee on Police, Dereleen James, described witnessing the aftermath on Jakes Gerwel Drive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever I drive through that strip, there\u2019s a smash-and-grab,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

James said the situation has become so routine that motorists take precautions every time they pass through the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe literally tell everyone in the car, be alert, be vigilant… put your phone under the seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the turning point came when she saw a body lying in the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was shocking for me was the many kids almost playing around the body. That\u2019s not meant to be the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viral video fuels anger and debate<\/b><\/p>\n

The killing, captured in a viral video, has sparked fierce debate.<\/p>\n

According to James, the suspect had fled after a smash-and-grab when a motorist opened fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what, it would be said that this guy… did not protect himself. He basically shot and killed someone who was running away from the crime scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident has raised questions about whether communities are crossing a line.<\/p>\n

Communities losing faith in policing<\/b><\/p>\n

James said the reaction from bystanders reflected a deeper crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunities have had enough of reporting incidents… and just nothing happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed to slow police response times and a lack of follow-through on cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re calling the police station, and they\u2019re taking hours to respond, sometimes not even respond… this is why communities… take the law into their own hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rise of mob justice<\/b><\/p>\n

Vigilante killings now make up a significant portion of murders in South Africa, with communities increasingly resorting to violence.<\/p>\n

James said she does not condone such actions but understands the frustration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has literally become the norm in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Are we building walls around the city?\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

The debate has also extended to proposed solutions.<\/p>\n

Plans to spend millions on barrier infrastructure to curb crime have drawn criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many walls are we going to have to build? Are we going to have to build walls around the entire Cape Town?\u201d<\/p>\n

James questioned whether such measures address the root causes of crime.<\/p>\n

A country desensitised to violence<\/b><\/p>\n

The incident has exposed what many South Africans already feel: a growing numbness to violence.<\/p>\n

As viral videos circulate and communities react with anger or indifference, the line between justice and retaliation is becoming increasingly blurred.<\/p>\n
