{"id":97625,"date":"2026-04-23T13:58:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/gauteng-malaria-cases-imported-from-high-risk-areas"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:00:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T14:00:51","slug":"gauteng-malaria-cases-imported-from-high-risk-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/gauteng-malaria-cases-imported-from-high-risk-areas","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng Malaria Cases Imported From High-Risk Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The Department of Health says transmission of malaria in South Africa remains largely concentrated in the low-lying provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>It said most cases reported in Gauteng are imported from outside the country.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as a sharp increase in malaria-related deaths have been reported in Gaunteng since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>414 cases and 11 deaths have been reported in the province, a significant increase from 230 cases and one death in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Malaria is a potentially deadly disease transmitted through bites of infected mosquitoes, with flu-like symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a webinar ahead of World Malaria Day on Saturday, Ednah Baloyi, director for malaria at the health department sought to allay concerns about the spread of infections in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Transmission is mainly reported or concentrated (7:17) in the low-lying areas of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, as well as KwaZulu-Natal province. I know that there&#8217;s been a lot of, you know, news making the rounds, or rather news making the rounds, on various platforms in terms of the transmission that&#8217;s happening in Gauteng.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But just to re-emphasise that Gauteng does not experience any local transmission, but rather most of those cases that are reported in the province are from other countries.
