Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The acting Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Peter Lam Both, has called on the party members in Eastern Equatoria State to unite the people for elections.

He made the statement during the SPLM political rally in Torit last Saturday. Lam urged the SPLM state secretariat to unite the members and register them in preparation for the forthcoming elections.

According to the Revitalised Peace Agreement, South Sudan is supposed to hold an election six months before the end of the transitional period. “Elections are coming in 2023, almost tomorrow, and your work as members of SPLM is to unite people, register their names, and tell the people we are moving towards elections.

“To the youth in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, we need to co-exist among ourselves and everybody [needs] to be peaceful in the country because we don’t want another conflict in the country,” Lam stated.

Meanwhile, SPLM Interim Chairman in Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong Lojore, who is also the governor of the state, said his area is peaceful and ready for the election. He emphasised the state government’s commitment to maintain the peace and to avoid dragging the people into anarchy.

“We are in peace and will continue to be in peace. That was signed by the president, and we want this peace to continue. We don’t want our people to suffer again,” Lobong said. Lobong blamed those who are sceptical that the elections would cause more violence, asserting that his state is ready to welcome the ballot boxes.

“We are preparing for elections. We need you to select the people you want. We need all South Sudanese to say boldly that they need a government where they have a voice because some people speak there that elections will not be held. How is this possible? “In Eastern Equatoria State, there is no place where elections will not happen,” Lobong said.

The Secretary-General was accompanied by Mark Nyipouch, a member of the SPLM Political Bureau, and other politicians. The SPLM team from the national secretariat visited Eastern Equatoria State to organize the state as part of its preparation for the upcoming elections.
