Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s win against the African champions in the World Cup African Qualifiers was a great display of the country’s talents in the world of basketball. This was a great win because it meant South Sudan became the first African country to beat Tunisia since 2018.
Despite last September’s loss, where Tunisia thrashed South Sudan 80-65 in the 2021 AfroBasket Quarter-Finals, on the way to their third African title, on Saturday, South Sudan shocked the African champions with a 72-64 win. This was the Day 2 match in Group B of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers in Dakar.
This victory comes a day after South Sudan beat Rwanda 72-64. These two wins are great victories for the basketball team and the nation as a whole. It is easy not to have straight wins and get those good results that many countries have not achieved despite their lengthy participation in the competition.
The national basketball team is giving more hope and pride to South Sudanese around the world, with a promising future to be the champions of Africa. There is always a way one can be the best at it. If football has not been giving us any hope, then basketball should now be our pride in the continental and world championships.
Check around the world of sports and you will find at least a certain country that is well known for certain sports. For instance, South Africa is well known for rugby, as Australia and India are known for tennis and cricket. Since the establishment of the national teams in all fields of sports, basketball seems to be the most promising sport that the nation can excel in.
However, this does not mean other sports activities like football and volleyball should be given less attention. There is a need to support all the sports to enable young people to show their talents to the world. Nevertheless, basketball needs to be given the most needed support because the future of the team looks brighter and more promising and it will put South Sudan on top of the African map. This was demonstrated by Saturday’s win against the times’ African champions, Tunisia.
It is very important to invest in sports to promote unity. This can also enable citizens who have active participation in the game to earn a living for their families. In most countries around the world, the sport has become a career where someone studies it to develop a career to support himself or herself and their dependants.
