Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the country’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/SPLA-IO), Dr. Riek Machar Teny has assigned General John Both Teny as the opposition military’s sector one commander.
General John Both Teny is a senior member of the SPLA-IO who has been loyal to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny since the formation of the main armed opposition group following the outbreak of conflict in Juba in December 2013.
Gen. Both replaces Gen. Yak Dayiem who was appointed as interim commander of sector one commander in August 2021 following the defection of General Johnson Olony Thabo who joined General Simon Gatwech Dual following the SPLM-IO split on August 3rd.
Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, a senior South Sudan army officer who is informed of the changes told Sudans Post that Gen. John Both Teny is the new sector one commander in Upper Nile state, effective March 2nd 2022.
“This is to confirm that the Chairman and Commander in Chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny has appointed General John Both Teny as the commander of sector one of the SPLA-IO in Upper Nile state,” the office told Sudans Post on condition of anonymity in Juba.\
“This is because General Yak Dayiem was appointed during tough times when our leadership needed a quick decision to choose someone to prevent troops from deserting their bases in the wake of the Kitgwang declaration which has now joined the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces,” the officer added.
