Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A South Sudan government official has said that the world’s youngest country may import, in the future, electricity from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, Gattiek Gatkuoth Wichar, the spokesman of South Sudan’s Water Resources and Irrigation minister, said the country however intents to build its own dam in the near future.

“What I know is that South Sudan will build her own dam, but that would be in the future,” he told Sudans Post from South Sudan’s capital Juba.

Regarding the question as to if South Sudan will import electricity from Ethiopia, this is something that may happen in the future and at this point in time, I have no answer for it,” he added.

South Sudan has strong relations with Ethiopia, but has not come out to publicly support the construction of the dam which Egypt and Sudan claim may affect their water shares.
