Kiir ally says ‘panic by top leaders’ such as Machar causes insecurity

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A close ally to President Salva Kiir Mayardit has claimed that panic by senior government officials such as First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny can cause insecurity in the world’s youngest country.

This is after Machar, who is also the leader of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), issued a statement last week announcing that his residence was surrounded by security forces.

A day earlier, a joint security force comprising elements of South Sudan National Security Service and South Sudan People’s Defense Forces was deployed to airport road that passes near Machar’s residence in Juba.

The deployment resulted in fears of return to violence as Machar said it was reminiscent of the events leading up to violence in December 2013 and July 2016 sparking civil war.

In a brief statement, Peter Mayuk, founder of the ‘I Support President Kiir’ political youth group, said any complains of insecurity by top government leaders such as First Vice President Machar can cause insecurity in the country.

“Any panic by such top leader causes insecurity that may be exploited by enemies of the country against the people of South Sudan’s peace and stability,” he said, adding that President Kiir “is the first person concerned of the nation’s insecurity.”
