Gatwech furious after being left out of unified army command

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan main armed opposition commander General Simon Gatwech Dual who signed a peace agreement with President Salva Kiir Mayardit in January is reportedly worried and furious after an agreement signed by Kiir and First Vice President Machar appeared to have left him out of the unified army command.

Last week, Kiir and Machar signed a peace agreement on the allocation of top security positions in the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS), National Security Service (NSS) and other security forces.

The agreement allocated top army positions to Machar’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and the rest remain with the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit leaving nothing to Gen. Gatwech’s group.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, a senior opposition diplomat allied to Gatwech said the group is not happy about the recent agreement that was signed by President Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar saying the deal tents to exclude the SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction from the peace implementation and the army.

“We are worried and General Gatwech personally is not happy because the parties in Juba have divided the army and other security command among themselves and this tents to exclude us from the entire security sector,” the official who requested not to be named said.
