Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The commissioner of Yirol West County on Thursday resigned from his position, alleging that he was denied the right to use the county commissioner’s residence and had been intimidated by the area governor. Andrew Acheng wrote a resignation letter on April 14, 2022, addressing it to Dr Riek Machar, the Chairperson of SPLM-IO.
“It has been two months since I was humiliated as the sitting commissioner in Yirol Freedom Square, arbitrarily arrested, put behind bars in Baburzeit Military Person and forced out of the county by Governor Rin Tueny,” the letter seen by The City Review.
The former commissioner in Lakes State explained the reasons for his resignation in the letter and alleged that frantic efforts by the First Vice President’s office to solve the administration’s differences failed to bear fruit.
“Your Excellency, after having given enough time waiting to seek an amicable political solution and to no avail, I have hereby decided to resign in Lakes State Government and particularly from Yirol West County as a Commissioner under the administration of the Governor Rin Tueny Mabor,” he stated.
Acheng specified in his resignation letter that he was denied rights to use the county commissioner’s residence and that there was a sabotage and responsibility interference not to mention the arbitrary arrest of SPLM-IO members in the county.
The City Review spoke to Puok Baluang, the spokesperson in the office of the First Vice President, about what could be the next step for Acheng in the SPLM-IO party after his resignation.
Baluang said that due to the ‘‘genuine reasons’’ that the former commissioner had raised, the deputy chair of the movement and the Sectary General Party had decided to accept his resignation to protect him.
“He is a member of the party, and it is to the leadership to strategise on his status since he can no longer serve as a commissioner and the leadership on how to find a way so that he can continue to support and serve that country and the leadership of IO, “he said.
According to Eye Radio, the minister of information in Lakes State said that the former commissioner’s working relationship was not in synchrony with that of the state administration.
“He has been away from his office for some time because he was having issues with the administration and that made him stay in Juba,” said Minister William Koji, adding this decision may help the system in the state.
The City Review could not independently verify the allegations by Mr Acheng since the office of the governor of Lakes State could not be reached via phone calls for rebuttal.
