SPLM/A-IO inaugurates general secretariat in Unity State

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), has launched its party’s general headquarters in Unity State in a bid to transform the movement into a political party.

The Director for Information and Public Relations, who doubles as the acting press secretary in the office of the first vice president, Puok Both Baluang, yesterday stated that the party was awaiting the political parties’ act to be passed for the movement to be registered as a political party.

“It is among the plans of the SPLM/A-IO to transform from an armed movement to a political party.” “[We are waiting for] the parliament to pass the political party law or act so that we can register as a political party in South Sudan,’’ he told The City Review.

‘‘After this, we are going to have offices in all 10 states,” Puok said.

Baluang cautioned that they were not conducting any mass mobilisation or rallies for the elections because the election is supposed to be the last item to be implemented in the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

‘Not a rally’

“Elections are the endpoint of the agreement, and this was not a rally.” It was [for] preparing our grassroots and trying to set up our foundation as a political party. “After the graduation of the unified forces, we will transform from SPLM/SPLA-IO to SPLM-IO,” he explained.

“This is just a start and a foundation, and people have turned up in huge numbers, celebrating the presence of the SPLM/SPLA-IO in Unity State and other states as well.”

Graduation timeline

On Friday, the Minister for Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, Michael Makuei Lueth, said although the graduation of the unified forces faces obstacles in the unification of command, it would soon be done.

“The unified forces are expected to be graduated after this.” But up to now, the command has not reported to us the final date for the graduation. Of course, one of the outstanding problems that were an obstacle all this time was the setting up of the unified command, “Makuei said.

He noted that they were waiting for the report from the unified command containing the situation date for the graduation of the unified forces.

“The unified command is already set up, and as such, we are waiting for this unified command to bring us their report for readiness to graduate these forces.” So these forces will be graduated at any time as soon as we receive the report, “Makuei said.
