Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission (SSPRC) has decried widespread intercommunal clashes in the country saying it is a threat to the nation’s security.
It called on all feuding parties and the civil population to desist from engaging in further violence.
Chuol Rambang Luoth, the chairperson for SSPRC, said conflicts between cattle keepers and farmers in Magwi, Abyei against Twic, Mayiandit, and Koch against Leer counties, have resulted in the senseless killings and displacement of people.
He was addressing the media yesterday to draw the public’s attention to the deteriorating security situation across the country.
“These conflicts undermine the genuine transition to stability as we implement the Revitalised Peace Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.
Rambang said that after meeting the cattle camp leaders that the mysterious livestock raiders invaded a cattle camp in Mugali Payam, Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, on May 11, 2022, killing 25 people, including 18 children and women, and looting over 1,000 herds of cattle.
He said the pastoralists went on a rampage in Nimule town and killed two police officers after their animals were raided.
He said even though the governor of Eastern Equatoria State accused the Murle armed youth of the attacks, Pibor Administrative Area has refuted the claim.
Also, Rambang added that clashes between Abyei and Twic of Warrap State were another source of insecurity in the country.
Lengthy clashes
The Twic community and the Ngok Dinka of Abyei began fighting in March when the former invaded Annet market, murdering people and setting the market on fire.
Amid the bloodshed, President Salva Kiir organised a high-level fact-finding committee, led by Vice President Hussein Abdalbagi, which resulted in a cease-fire agreement between the warring communities on May 5th in Aweil town.
He said on Sunday, May 15, 2022, that a larger group of youth alleged to be from Mayiendit County in Unity State attacked several cattle camps in Leer County, killing at least 20 youth.
Stephen Taker said 15 of the attackers were killed, and six were from Leer’s side.
Taker stated that the attacks persisted despite several interventions from the government to stop the fight.
“These conflicts are happening when South Sudan is fully implementing the R-ARCSS, with the most recent significant steps in the implementation of chapters 2 and 5 of the peace in security arrangement and truth, healing and reconciliation respectively,” Rambang decried.
He called on government agencies and organized forces to respect presidential directives and resolve the conflicts among communities.
