Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir will be the chief guest at a fundraiser event that will see tip raise $2 million for the national – Bright Stars.
The event will take place at the Freedom Hall, Juba, Saturday noon.
The fund raise seeks to raise money for the national team budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier starting with a game against the Gambia on June 4 in Senegal.
Bright Stars are currently in Morocco, where they will pitch a five-day camp before travelling to Dakar early next week.
The fundraiser was initially penciled for May 17, 2022. It was, however, pushed back by a fortnight because president Kiir had travelled to Abu Dhabi for the burial of former United Arabs Emirates President Sheikh al-Khalifa.
South Sudan Football Association General Augustino Maduot confirmed that the head of state will attend the fundraiser.
“We will be holding a fundraiser event to support the national team on Saturday. President (Kiir) will be in attendance,” he said at Buluk during the final match of the National League between Zalan and Super Stars.
The head of the SSFA urged fans to express their support for the team and help them qualify for the African Cup of Nations in 2023.
Yohanis Musa Pouk, Deputy Chairman of the High-Level Committee for the South Sudan National Team Fundraising Event, told The City Review that funds will help Bright Stars honour the group state qualification matches.
“As a country, we are ecstatic; we have never been to this point before; we will be much more ecstatic if we qualify for the AFCON; however, they will only do so if they are supported,” he said during their last news conference.
The national team need at least a $2 million budget to host their home matches away in Uganda.
South Sudan will play away due to the unavailability of the Juba National Stadium which is still undergoing renovation.
The government is obligated to fund the national football team, an obligation that is currently struggling to meet due to the ongoing political instability.
As a result, the committee taught students the value of working together and contributing to the campaign.
