Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A United States Senator has told the Intergovernmental Authority on Development) IGAD) and South Sudan government to contribute meaningfully to the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, a day after the regional bloc revealed that the US has significantly scaled down its funding to peace implementation.
Yesterday, the IGAD said in a communiqué following a gathering of regional heads of state in Nairobi that the US, a key donor to South Sudan, has significantly cut its funding to the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement affecting the work of important peace implementation mechanisms such as the CTSAMVM and R-JMEC.
The IGAD urged “key partners of the South Sudan Peace Process particularly the United States of America to reconsider their decision to significantly scale down their support to the peace process in South Sudan that is crippling the work of critical agreement mechanisms such as the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) and the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM); and agencies supporting the delivery of much-needed humanitarian assistance.”
But Sen. Jim Risch said the United States of America has been the largest contributor to South Sudan peace process with no results and while the powerful South Sudan friend remains the largest donor, he urged the IGAD and the government in South Sudan to meaningfully to the implementation process of the revitalized peace agreement.
“Since 2014, the U.S. has been a large contributor to peace agreement bodies in South Sudan, RJMEC & CTSAMVM with lackluster results. The U.S. also remains by far the largest donor to South Sudan,” Sen. Risch wrote on Twitter.
“It’s time for IGAD & South Sudan government to contribute meaningfully to lasting peace,” he added.
