Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Governments have been told to properly remunerate servicemen and women if it wants to tame criminal activities in the country.
Edmund Yakani, Community Empowerment Progress for Organization (CEPO) Executive Director argued that officers should be properly paid so that they don’t fall into the trap of organised crime like erecting illegal roadblocks.
“These are good soldiers. If we add good money to their pockets an unknown gunman (sic) will disappear in South Sudan. Intercommunal violence will stop if we pay them good salaries,” Yakani said.
He was speaking at Dr John Garang Mausoleum during the graduation of more than 52, 000 soldiers. The event was attended by President Salva Kiir, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and First Vice President Riek Machar among other regional leaders and the diplomatic community.
“Go out there clear of unknown gunmen” he added.
“This is the political will we have been looking for,” he said.
He urged them to put more effort and commitment to bring lasting peace to the people of South Sudan.
Yakani urged the forces to leave behind their political affiliation but focus on serving the nation (South Sudan).
“When politicians wanted to jump into the river do not follow them with this uniform, this uniform is for the nation,” he said.
“I am taking responsibility to communicate to you that from today onward you are not for ‘OYEE’ (SPLM-IG) or ‘VIVA’ (SPLM/IO)….you are for the constitution of South Sudan.
“This uniform is not for tribes; it is not for politicians it is for the country; to protect the flag [that] we are seeing up there,” he added.
The activist further challenged politicians to use constitutional avenues like the parliament and cabinet meeting to address their differences.
