Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Aweil’s Tiger United Women’s Football Club thrashed Hai Toch FC to seal the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State girls’ peace competition in Aweil.
Thousands of Hai Toch fans were dismayed by the game’s outcome, which saw the Tiger Ladies win 3-1.
The competition was intended to promote peace as both teams and spectators joined the winners to close the peace celebration.
The Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Minister of Youth, Culture, and Sports, Bol Akuar Gamar, noted in a statement shortly after the game Thursday that sports activities have naturally brought together young people who share passion and experience.
According to him, there may be a distinct relationship between them and their parents’ teachers at school, community elders, and religious leaders, but the event has opened the door for a different kind of conversation.
“In some communities, girls and women may be reluctant to join in or forbidden from participating in conventional sporting activities. Hence, empowering girls and women is extremely vital. It’s crucial that sports may impart life lessons through involvement,” the youth and sports minister added.
The official continued, “Young people can learn about fitness and health, goal-setting and personal growth, punctuality and time management, respect for the structure and regulations, and respect for teammates’ responsibilities.”
He expressed gratitude to Empower Youth Africa for the outstanding effort made to unite young people in the state.
The State Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Kaku Lucia, encouraged girls to move out of their houses and get engaged in sports.
“It made them commit in order to forget about things to do with marriage, because when the girl is committed to the sports…it encourages other girls who were sitting idle at home to love sports activities,” she stressed.
