Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The veteran politician who served as a leader of Anyanya One, Joseph Lagu, paid a courtesy call to President Salva Kir on Saturday.
From 1978 to 1979, Lagu served as Vice President of Sudan and as the second President of the High Executive Council of the autonomous region of Southern Sudan.
The Minister of Presidential Affairs, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, described Joseph Lagu as one of the pioneers of the struggle.
“Joseph Lagu is one of the pioneers of the struggle and the achievement of the independence we have today. He trained the officers who led the Anyanya One Movement and the SPLM/A, including our late leader Dr. John Garang and our current President, Salva Kiir Mayardit.”They are a product of his training,” said Dr Marial.
“He came this morning to visit the president as a courtesy call and to wish him a happy new year and to continue with the leadership of the country with the blessings of almighty God.”
The 93-year-old was accompanied by his daughter, Josephine Lagu, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
This is the second time that Joseph Lagu has visited President Kiir. Last year in January, Lagu, visited Kiir, where he called for peace among South Sudanese and their neighbours.
“God bless him (Salva Kiir), God bless the country he is leading, and God bless our neighbuor(s) and keep us friendly. There is no war among us or with our neighbors. “Peace has come, and it will stay now and forever,” said the veteran politician Lagu.
The 93-year-old, was the commander of the Anya-nya One, the military wing of the Southern Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM) that revived the Torit mutiny of 1955.
