Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir warned that peace could remain elusive in Sudan if Gen. Abdel Wahid Nur and Gen Abdul-Aziz Adam Al Hilu—who rejected the 2020 Juba Peace Accord—are yet to commit to it.
The two heads of armed opposition forces refused to sign the Juba peace accord, which President Kiir helped broker between the Sudanese government and various rebel groups operating in places like Darfur, the Southern Blue Nile, and the Nuba Mountains.Al Hilu leads a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (North), while Nur is the chairman of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM).
“I would like to call upon General Abdul-Aziz Adam Al Hilu, the leader of the SPLM-North, and General Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nur, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, to seriously consider joining the JPA.
“Lasting peace in Sudan will remain elusive until these leaders join the peace trail and help to restore instability and ensure shared prosperity for Sudan,” he said.
Kiir’s call comes at a time when the parties to the Juba Peace Agreement signed an implementation matrix aimed at expediting the implementation of the pact.
Due to a number of difficulties, including the ongoing political situation in Sudan, the accord has not made much progress since it was signed.
