Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar are currently locked up in a meeting where serious compromises are expected to be made, if a solution to the glaring standoff arising from changes in the ministry of defence last week, is to be found.
The president fired Angelina Teny as minister of defence and veteran affairs last Friday. The opposition said the move was in contravention of Chapter One of the agreement.
Machar has been calling for the reinstatement of Angelina and the reversal of the president’s decision to swap the ministry of defence and that of the interior.
The ministry of defence was previously under SPLM-IO, with the interior under SPLM-
Machar termed the changes unilateral while warning that “our options are open” if the president doesn’t rescind his decision.
The standoff spawned a meeting that finally took place today, Friday, after two postponements on Monday and Thursday.
Today’s meeting, as City Review will understand, will focus on the recent violations and how to fix them.
“We hope that the meeting would observe the spirit and letter of the Revitalised Peace Agreement,” Puok Baluang, acting press secretary office of FVP said in a short statement seen by City Review.
Among the violations cited by SPLM-IO include the dismissal of Angelina and the recent revocation of the speaker of Jonglei among others.
