Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan Basketball will need nearly SSP 200 million to complete the construction of six of the country’s ongoing basketball courts.
The federation inaugurated its first court in Kuajok, Warrap State, as part of its countrywide effort to revamp the facilities.
Kuajok Basketball Court was one of six courts that the South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) began constructing earlier this year.
According to Dr. Arou Ramadan Chan, the SSBF deputy who also serves as acting secretary general, the cost of each court varies from one to another and depends on the type of soil, location, contractors, and materials needed and used.
“But it varies between $35,000 and $45,000 depending on the elements I mentioned, including the distances,” Dr. Chan said.
He stated that the federation is constructing the courts with funds provided by well-wishers.
“You may recall that the federation recently received sponsorship from MTN, as well as from some groups,” he said. “After receiving the funds, federation president Luol Deng directed us to channel them into the development of those courts,” said Chan.
He described the opening of the Kuajok basketball court as a significant step forward in the country’s basketball development.
“We’ve started; we’ve only launched Kuajok, but Wau and Bor are almost finished, and Torit, Rembek, and Yambio are already finished and ready for launch, which will happen soon.”
“This is the first phase, for which approximately six courts are expected, and as soon as they are completed, the second phase will begin in the other places where we intend to construct at least one basketball court,” Dr. Chan told The City Review on Tuesday.
He claims that all of the completed basketball courts will be of high quality and can be accessed from anywhere in the region.
“It is a court that is durable and accessible by anyone and anywhere because it is tarred, and it can last for more than seven years before it needs to be renovated or new technologies installed by installing plastic basketball cups,” he added.
He encouraged other sponsors to join those who were already on the board in order to promote basketball development across the country.
He expects “the entire phrase one basketball project” to be completed by April 2023.
