Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, lamented that most of the South Sudanese technocrats are not performing to the expected standards due to a lack of motivation.
Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day workshop for launching the first-ever South Sudan One Health Multisectoral Coordination Mechanism (MCM) platform, Lomuro said the workers do not get the necessary resources to discharge their duties. “People do not get the right budget to do their jobs; they do not get the right enumerations,” he said on Monday.
“They do not have accommodations; they do not have mobility, and yet you expect them to perform to the maximum of their abilities.” That is the kind of challenge that we are facing,” Dr Lomuro said.
MCM aims at harmonising joint efforts in mitigating health crises in the country.
The workshop brought together several health experts—both national and international—who were called to define the government’s role in the One Health Mechanism.Lomuro added that the technocrats’ efforts have clearly illustrated their ability and knowledge of the challenges that each sector faces.
He said there is a common understanding that the government and the technocrats need to approach the multisectoral challenges.
The cabinet minister reminded the technocrats about their role, saying they are not only building a nation, but also transforming it.
“What is government without giving services to the people,” he asked.“That is our burden, and that is the reason why our technocrats are not performing to their required standards because they are not motivated.”
He noted that it is the kind of challenge that they are facing and that cannot be addressed easily.
However, in his previous address on Tuesday, Lomuro pledged to support the initiative with the president’s support in order to protect South Sudanese health and the environment.
“As minister for cabinet affairs, I will work with the president to ensure that the platform receives maximum support, and if technically necessary, we will also be present to do what is necessary to secure the health of our people, our environment, and the health of our animals, both domestic and wildlife,” he said.The tripartite organizations (FAO, WHO, WOAH) and technical experts developed the Multisectoral Coordination Mechanism Operational Tool (MCM OT) to assist national authorities in establishing their multisectoral, one-health coordination mechanism to manage zoonotic diseases.
Zoonotic diseases are infections that spread from humans to animals. Germs such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi cause these infections. Some are severe and life-threatening, such as rabies, while others are milder and resolve on their own.
According to health officials, a one-health approach is necessary to address such complex health threats at the human-animal-environment interface.
