Take advantage of free education to school girl-child – Kiir to parents

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir has once again reiterated the government’s call to empower the girl-child through education.

The head of state, while addressing citizens in his peace tour of Northern Bahr el Ghazal on Wednesday, March 22, told parents to take seriously the education of the girl child.

“Girl child education is a collective responsibility for everyone; let us use this free education to empower girl child education,” President Kiir said while addressing residents of Arroyo at a government event.

Last week, while in Warrap, the head of state told parents to ensure that every child of school-going age is enrolled in school.

“No child should stay at home without being taken to school.

“I urged you to take all [children], especially girls, to school,” Kiir said over the weekend.

The president has been on a week-long tour of the Bahr el Ghazal region, launching a number of projects.

According to Countrymeter.info, just about 2,169,639 persons (31.99 percent) of the adult population (aged 15 years and above) in South Sudan are able to read and write. Accordingly, about 4.6 of the 11 million adults are illiterate.

The literacy rate for the adult male population is 38.62 percent (1,311,786 persons) and 25.34 percent for females, respectively. These numbers tend to worry the president, hence his call for the eradication of illiteracy on all fronts in South Sudan.

This has also led the president to declare free primary and secondary school education in all government schools across the country in order to bridge the literacy gap between South Sudan and other parts of the world.
