Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) agreed to set up a joint task force for the coordination of constitution-making and electoral processes.
The plan was presented to the Council of Ministers by the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, on Friday.
In that presentation, the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, said Lomuro described how the joint taskforce would be set up, factoring in the participation of UNMISS and the government.
“So that we start the dissemination and implementation of the constitution-making process and electoral programs,” said Makuei. “This process is of course a long way, and you know very well that the constitution-making process is a long way, and at the same time, the electoral program is also another long way, and as such, it needs coordination between the government and our partners so that we can implement this agreement in time.”
“This was passed by the cabinet, and then we listened to the popularisation plan for the implementation of the extended period of the roadmap,” Makuei added.
The information minister said the plan was meant for dissemination of the agreement as well as the roadmap.
According to Makuei, there is a need to sensitise the population on what is in the agreement and the roadmap to the agreement so that it is clear to them.
Makuei said the programme will cover the whole of South Sudan and the refugees so that the agreement and the roadmap is disseminated to them.
Meanwhile, he said the council of ministers has also approved a conference on transitional justice mechanisms under the theme; Building sustainable South Sudan Model for Transitional Justice System.”.
This is in accordance with Chapters Five and Six of the revitalised peace agreement on the Compensation and Reparation Authority and the Commision for Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing.
“This conference is being planned, and through this, we will invite experts on all these to come and give us further clarification about what all these are about because there are some countries that have had the experience,” he said.
Makuei continued that those countries would be invited to attend the conference so that people are educated to enable them to move on the right track.
However, on March 27, President Salva Kiir announced that the conference would take place in April during his keynote at the opening of the first parliamentary session of the Transitional National Legislature for 2023.
South Sudan has currently settled on December 2024 as the date for holding an election to ensure a full transition into the democratic phase.
