Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Veteran politician Joseph Lagu has encouraged President Salva Kiir to restore peace and unity across the country.
This came after the president visited the former leader of the Anyanya Movement, at his residence in Juba, on Thursday, June 8.
94-year-old Lagu encouraged Kiir to carry on with the good work of restoring peace and uniting the country.
Lagu, 94, is the father of Josephine Lagu, the minister for agriculture and food security.
Lagu was born in 1929 at Momokwe, Moli, north of Madiland, Eastern Equatoria State, about 80 miles from Juba.
He graduated from Omdurman Military College in 1960.
Lagu served as President of the High Executive Council that represented Southern Sudan from 1978 to 1979.
However, he defected from the Sudanese army on June 4, 1963, to participate in the struggle against the Sudanese government with the then-Southern Sudan Resistance Movement.
On August 18, 1955, the first Sudanese civil war broke out, which would later turn out to be the start of the Anyanya movement to fight against the Sudanese government.
In September 1963, Lagu formed the military wing of the movement.
