Africa-Press – South-Sudan. An opposition politician belonging to the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) who was detained after he abandoned the ruling SPLM faction under President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been released.
Speaking to Sudans Post, Dut Majokdit, SPLM-IO member of National Liberation Council and Chairperson of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State said Gabriel Bol Dut was released after his kidnappers failed to pressure him into reconsidering his decision to join Machar.
“He was released yesterday, and this is after they failed to coerce him into reconsidering his decision to join the SPLM-IO under the wise leadership of H.E the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon,” Dut told Sudans Post from Aweil on phone.
“No, he is a full member of the SPLM-IO, and this is a testament that we will not be compelled into doing something that we don’t want to do. The people of South Sudan are fed up of this system and this is very clear that they are forcing people into staying with them,” he added.
He called on the public to “join the revolution and we believe that if free and fair elections are going to take place in 2024, we will win the election without any doubt and that’s why we must not give chance to their incitement for violence.”
Bol, a former SPLM Secretary for Syndicated Organization in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, was arrested on June 22 after he declared his intention to abandon Kiir’s party and join the main armed opposition SPLM-IO under Machar.
Prior to his arrest, he was reportedly called by unknown person for a meeting and later on pushed into a vehicle and detained at the National Security Service (NSS) in Aweil.
