Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Acting Mayor of Juba City Council, Emmanuel Khamis, approved the 2023–2024 fiscal budget and rate schedule to guide and finance the operations of the city council.

He promised to support the legislative council and work diligently to address key areas that are critical and within the mandate of the Juba City Council.

Khamis touched on garbage collection and waste management, security and law enforcement, the purchase of garbage equipment, and the reopening and grading of internal city roads as some of the critical priorities.

He stressed the need to construct bridges and culverts, as well as fix traffic lights and decongest parking along roads and highways.

In his statement, the acting mayor revealed eight direct reforms in the city council, including the establishment of an anti-corruption unit and the recruitment of whistle-blowers to report and truck down rampant corruption in the city council.

Khamis took over the leadership of the Juba City Council at the end of June 2023 after the Central Equatoria State governor, Emmanuel Adil, issued a decree toppling the former mayor, Michael Allah Jabu, and his two deputies.

Khamis, who took over in a caretaker role on the following day, promised a series of radical changes in the operations of the city council, with the hawkers operating at Custom Market feeling his wrath immediately, after he ordered their relocation. Key items on his agenda were the cleanliness of the city and security, which he said must be addressed.
