Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The executive director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, Edmund Yakani, urged the principles of the peace agreement to implement crucial chapters that would operationalize the process of an election.

Yakani said both SPLM-IG and SPLM-IO should prioritize the reconstitution of the political party council and national election commission if the poll is to be conducted.

“My appeal to the SPLM-IG if they say they are ready to go for elections, can they timely reconstitute the political council, and the national election commission together with their partners,” he said.

Also, he called on SPLM-IO to engage with SPLM-IG on the implementation of the unification of forces.

“The SPLM-IO said they are not ready because of the unification of forces can they put the unification of forces as their main concern and make it an area of engagement with the SPLM-IG.”

According to Yakani, the two parties have divergent narratives that could only be interpreted as tactics to delay the election.

“If we are to go for a peaceful and credible election…they both have the primary responsibility to agree on the preconditions for the conduct of the election,” he said.

However, President Salva Kiir affirmed in his political tour to Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal that the election would take place as scheduled in December 2024.

“I am deeply touched by your endorsement and your continued support of our historic party,” Kiir told tens of thousands of supporters at Wau Stadium.

“As party members, let us work on the basis that there will be no extension of the transitional period, and we have to go for the elections,” he said.

On the other side, Goanar Gordon, the acting spokesperson of SPLM-IO leader and First Vice President Riek Machar, said there are critical issues that were provided by the agreement that require implementation to ensure a free and fair election, warning of the chances of having a premature election if not implemented.
