Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Authorities in Warrap State on Tuesday formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the shooting at the Matiel Peace rally.
The incident happened on November 19, 2023, in Gogrial East County and left one person dead.
The shooting prompted the area governor, Manhiem Bol Malek, to issue a gubernatorial order on Tuesday for the formation of a security fact-finding committee to probe the incident.
The committee is headed by Brig. Gen Awuou Nyariel and deputised by Lt. Col. Kuol Mawien, Molana Akol as a secretary, and two other members.
The order directed the committee to investigate the root causes of the random shooting, investigate relevant witnesses, and make their recommendation to the governor for action.
The shooting took place after the governor of Warrap State and a delegation from the national parliament reportedly left the venue.
The officials had gone to address the Manyang clashes between Marial Wau of Jur River County of Western Bahr el Ghazal State and Buoi Yar of Gogrial East County of Warrap State.
However, according to the statement of Warrap State Information Minister William Wol, the incident was interrupted by one man from the Apuk Giir, who ran to a nearby house, snatched an AK47 rifle, and started shooting in the direction of the rally after a youth representative was invited to address the audience.
The Apuk Youth Union in Wau has since released a statement refuting the allegation levelled against them by the state information minister.
The union instead accused a governor’s bodyguard of attacking innocent youth in Matiel.
“We demand the government of Warrap State take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in the state,” the statement partly read.
Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal State have been experiencing border issues, forcing two neighbouring communities of Jur-river County and Gogrial East County into conflict in the disputed area of Manyang.
