Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir on Thursday arrived in the Tanzanian capital Arusha where he is expected to take part in the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.

The South Sudanese head of state is also expected to assume the chairmanship of the East African Community from his Burundian counterpart, Evariste Ndayhimiye, whose tenure has come to an end.

“President Kiir’s nomination as the Chair of EAC Head of State Summit signifies South Sudan’s commitment to deepening regional integration,” said Kiir’s press secretary Lily Adhieu Martin.

The summit is being held under the theme “Accelerating Economic Recovery through Climate Action and Enhancing Food Security for Improved Livelihoods.”

South Sudan officially joined the EAC on April 16, 2016, and this will be the first time Kiir has taken the mantle of the regional bloc.

Kiir was accompanied by a huge delegation of senior government officials and was seen by at Juba International Airport by his first deputy and opposition leader Riek Machar.
