Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir has urged developed countries to consider financing projects that will tackle climate change affecting poor and developing nations, in his address to the climate change conference in Dubai.
The COP28 Summit drew over 180 leaders from around the world to discuss ways to tackle climate change through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
President Kiir said South Sudan has been severely impacted by climate change, through catastrophic flooding and drought which affected the livelihood of many people in the country.
“I urge global partners to build livelihood of people in the global South through capacity building to embark on green growth, the time for ambitious climate action is now” he said.
The world leaders have endorsed the ‘COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action, according to Kiir’s office.
The Declaration confronts global emissions and protects the lives and livelihoods of farmers who are on the frontlines of climate change.
South Sudan has since ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change making it number 147 country out of 193 nations to join a fight against global warming through reduction of carbon emission.
At the summit, the United States led calls for efforts to curb methane emissions but also pushed a deeply controversial drive to boost nuclear energy to curb global warming, AFP reported.
This call comes as the use of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is highly controversial as environmental groups are concerned about safety and the disposal of nuclear waste.
