Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Police in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State are detaining more than 20 teachers who allegedly rioted on Thursday at the State Ministry of Finance over salary cuts.
Albino Atem Bol, a teacher, told Sudans Post that they tried to meet with the finance minister to address concerns about salary reductions implemented by the national salaries committee last year.
“It’s unfortunate that teachers have been arrested and tortured while seeking their rightful salaries,” Atem said.
“They claim some teachers vandalized the office, but we were peaceful. Now they’re accusing us of violence and filing a lawsuit against us, instead of addressing our grievances,” he added.
Another teacher, Abuk Juach Akot, said the committee was supposed to resolve their issues, but the police intervened and became abusive.
“They seriously injured some of us, and they’re now being treated,” Akot said. “Around 27 teachers are incarcerated and will be charged, according to the police.”
Some teachers claim that the ministry of finance staff have also blocked the committee from intervening and resolving the situation.
Attempts to reach the minister of finance for comments were unsuccessful as calls rang unanswered.
