Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, hailed the ongoing Nairobi Peace Talks saying the discussion began on a proper footing.
Yakani noted that the opening discussions were constructive and are offering hope for a functional peace deal that could bring stability to South Sudan.
He highlighted the pivotal role played by both signatories and non-signatories of the Revitalised Peace Agreement in presenting their concerns and perspectives on critical issues such as justice, economy, security, and governance.
He emphasised the importance of addressing these fundamental challenges to pave the way for lasting peace in the country.
“The presentations made by various stakeholders have set the stage for meaningful dialogue and negotiation,” he noted in a statement seen by The City Review.
He expressed optimism about the sincerity and openness exhibited by participants during the talks, noting the importance of maintaining the same spirit throughout the process.
In response to the presentations, he said: “the government has begun engaging and providing responses to the concerns raised by stakeholders.”
“This exchange of ideas and feedback is seen as a crucial step towards finding common ground and crafting viable solutions to the nation’s crisis,” he added.
Yakani further outlined the agenda for the upcoming negotiations, which will focus on consolidating positions and defining both the problems and potential solutions.
He urged citizens to remain hopeful and prayerful, emphasising the importance of Nairobi producing a functional peace deal that addresses the root causes of conflict and brings about much-needed peace and stability in South Sudan.
The Nairobi Peace Talks formally began on Friday, May 10, 2024, after President Salva Kiir presided over its opening on the Thursday.
Kiir underscored the need for dialogue as he called on the holdout groups to engage the team that he had appointed for the talks.
