Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Female parliamentarians have called on the donors and government to support programs aimed at strengthening women. While addressing the media yesterday, Mary Nawai Martin, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs called on the government and the donors to support women programs meant to strengthen and enrich women with knowledge in order to take part in the country’s discussion making.

“I am calling on the International donors like UN women and others to support our programs for the implementation of peace agreement because if we have the basic services in places, we will be able to have peace in our minds in our houses and in the Republic of South Sudan,” Nawai said.

“The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs needs to see female parliamentarians being supported” she added. She revealed that the Female Parliamentarians would stand firm to poster laws that bring basic service delivery to the country

Nawai appreciated the UN women for the support given to female Parliamentarians through the recent exposure visits to the two East African countries of Kenya and Rwanda.

“I am very happy and appreciated the support from UN women for these two trips to Kenya and Rwanda, the firsts delegation comprised of 15 MPs from the two houses, the council of states and TNLA went to Kenya then the second trip also had 15 from the two houses council of states and TNLA all the trips were supported by the UN women and I really appreciate the support” she expressed. Mary mentioned several objectives of the exposure visits citing that the visits were for knowledge gain by the MPs.

“The objectives of the trips were to learn from our fellow parliamentarians from Kenya and Rwanda on parliamentary engagements, to gain knowledge on parliamentary engagement for posturing democratic governance and effective social services delivery, to increase knowledge on the role of female parliamentarians in setting the narratives and influence government discussions,” she said.

“We really met the objectives because we interacted with parliamentarians in Kenya and in Rwanda” she added.

She added that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs would establish a data centre for all the female MPs adding that the data would ease the empowerment program for women. Nawai revealed that MPs would foster laws that lead to service delivery to the citizens.

“Women can foster the law that can all these services to the people of South Sudan, MPs represent the will of the people and the will of the people of South Sudan is services delivery like the clean water, roads education and health centres” she explained.

Meanwhile, UN women country representative Peterson Magoola reaffirmed the UN Women support for female Parliamentarians and women at large in South Sudan.

“It is a really great opportunity to partner with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to explore ways through which we can build the capacity the particularly of the newly appointed women members of the national legislative Assembly and we will continue to give necessary assistance to the women in South Sudan,” Magoola said.
