Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A South Sudanese police officer has been arrested over revenge murder in Twic County of Warrap State.
Sergeant Major Pab Atem was arrested on Tuesday after he shot and killed a man named Angok Akoon, whom he accused of murdering his brother in a dispute over cattle theft.
Brigadier Geng Mayen Geng, the chief inspector of police in Twic County, told Sudans Post on Wednesday that the suspect had accused Angok Akoon of murdering his brother several years ago at Ajak Kuac.
“The police officer Pab Atem claims that the man he shot in the neck, Angok Akoon, stole their cattle at Ajak Kuac and killed his brother in an attempt to flee the scene when he was spotted,” Mayen said.
Mayen said the deceased, Angok Akoon, was rushed to St. Teresa Hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet wound.
“On 28 June, the man was killed due to cattle theft.” He claims that the man whom he shot stole their cows, and when he spotted him, he shot him in the neck, and that bullet killed him instantly,” he said.
He said the suspect has been transferred to Kuajok, the capital city of Warrap State, where he is being interrogated.
Mayen urged the deceased’s family to refrain from seeking revenge killings.
As South Sudan is grappling with insecurity, including food insecurity, issues of cattle theft, which are occurring in communities where people keep cattle and rear them for prestige, are on the rise.
Despite states of emergency being declared in Warrap and some parts of Unity State, such as Mayom County, nothing is being seen as a tangible solution to the recurrent problems of cattle raiding and revenge killings.
