Kiir Insincere About Talks with Opposition Groups

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The National Democratic Movement-Patriotic Front (NDM-PF) has said President Salva Kiir is not genuine about, and has no patriotic spirit and political will to negotiate with the opposition to resolve the crises in South Sudan.

On Wednesday, while opening the National Legislature, President Kiir called for dialogue with holdout groups who did not sign the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.

In rebuttal through a press statement the next day, NDM-PF Secretary General Pasquale Clement Nyakang said dialogue is a cardinal principle for resolving disputes peacefully, a noble process that can’t be rejected. However, dialogue must be anchored on addressing the root causes of the conflict in our nascent Republic of South Sudan.

“This is not the first time President Kiir has made such an utterance. South Sudanese are tired of empty phrases that are not backed up by tangible political commitments. To date, the R-ARCSS 2018 has totally collapsed due to President Kiir’s intransigence and bad faith in implementing its various provisions,” he wrote. “Vice President Dr. Riak Machar and his colleagues in the SPLM-IO are still under arrest, and security arrangements have been violated beyond repair.”

On the call to holdout groups to join the peace agreement, Nyakang said Kiir and his partner signatories to the 2018 Agreement have been negotiating with South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA) since 2020 in Rome under the auspices of the Community of Sant’Egidio.

“This initiative was aimed to address the root causes of the conflict in South Sudan, but President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his cohorts show no patriotic spirit and political will to negotiate with the opposition while showing interest in dismantling the initiative, not to negotiate in good faith,” the statement highlighted. “Juba regime has walked out of the Rome talks and recently walked out of the Tumaini peace initiative in Nairobi. So, for President Kiir to accuse the opposition of continuing to reject dialogue is insincere and misleading.”

“In conclusion, the government must indicate its seriousness in seeking peace, which is an important pillar for genuine and constructive dialogue,” the NDM-PF statement ended.
