N Bahr El Ghazal Assembly Defers Recess for Budget

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Legislative Assembly has postponed going on recess to allow the state’s finance minister to present the proposed budget for the 2025-2026 year before lawmakers for deliberation.

Last Thursday, State Finance Minister Peter Dut Akot presented a proposed budget of SSP 40.5 billion to the state cabinet during a meeting chaired by Governor Simon Uber Mawut.

In a memo to the government and cabinet, Minister Dut explained that the proposed budget focuses on strengthening essential public services and ensuring a more equitable distribution of resources.

“The fiscal year 2025–2026 budget is designed to improve service delivery, support local councils, and boost development efforts across Northern Bahr el Ghazal,” he stated.

Dur appealed for timely deliberations and approval of the budget to enable effective implementation.

According to the proposal, the SSP 40,729,625,253 budget is allocated as follows: Salaries and wages SSP 7.06 billion, goods and Services/operations SSP 15.39 billion, grants and transfers to municipal and county councils SSP 13.30 billion, and capital expenditure SSP 4.96 billion.

However, the presentation of the budget to parliament has been delayed due to the assembly’s scheduled recess.

However, Majok Madut Gar, a SPLM Party lawmaker representing Buoncuai and Ajak constituencies in Aweil South County, told Radio Tamazuj that the delay was procedural.

“The budget was expected to be presented to the August House on Monday, and parliament was supposed to go on recess on Monday, 10 November 2025,” Madut explained. “So, the state government requested the assembly to postpone the date it was to go on recess. I urge the leadership to let the assembly postpone the date of recess to at least December 2025 for the purpose of deliberating on the budget.”

Responding to the concerns, the assembly spokesperson, Garang Deng Dut, confirmed that the leadership agreed to the postponement of the recess date to 11 December.

“We were supposed to go for recess on Monday, 10 November 2025, but we extended the period because of the budget. The minister requested one month, and the assembly complied,” he stated.

With the extension of the current session now granted, lawmakers are awaiting the finance minister’s formal presentation of the budget for parliamentary deliberation and approval.
