Gudele Market Reopening and Road Clearing Announced

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Juba City Council Mayor informs Gudele Market traders of the market’s planned reopening and the immediate clearing of the main road leading to the site.

Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani Swaka announced the market revitalization plans during an inspection visit to Gudele Market on Thursday, December 4, 2025, where he engaged directly with administrators and traders.

According to a statement by Juba City Council, the main focus of the visit was ensuring the smooth reopening of the market, clearing the main highway, and tackling the persistent challenge of roadside vending that obstructs traffic and limits access.

Mayor Swaka emphasized the urgent need for vendors to relocate to the designated market area to reduce congestion and improve public safety.

He also urged all traders to renew their business licenses to ensure legal compliance and sustainability. Market administrators raised immediate concerns about the poor condition of access roads, which complicates movement for both customers and traders.

Mayor Swaka pledged swift action, committing to prioritize road rehabilitation to revitalize the area and restore public confidence.

“I believe this is a good opportunity to revitalize this market and repair the road leading to it,” Mayor Swaka said.

“We will do this quickly so that people feel confident that the market exists. This isn’t just a market; it also includes other facilities. We will provide a bus station and public transportation, along with a clear access road.”

The Mayor highlighted that the revitalization of Gudele Market provides an opportunity for traders displaced by the fire that ravaged Nyakuron Market to rebuild and find a better place to operate.

The Council reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a safer, more organized, and business-friendly environment by improving infrastructure, enforcing compliance, and supporting traders, aiming to strengthen local commerce and enhance service delivery for the community.
