Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Mayor of Juba City says plans are underway to support traders affected by the recent Custom Market fire that destroyed hundreds of shops in the busy business center.
Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani made the announcement this afternoon after meeting with the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Sarafino Wani said the discussions focused on identifying immediate and long-term solutions for traders whose businesses were severely affected.
According to the Mayor, the support will be given in three stages; short-term, medium-term, and long-term.
He says these steps are meant to help traders recover their livelihoods and to make sure the market gets back to normal operations.”
However, he did not specify the type of support or when it will reach the traders.
“We are thinking together, putting our minds together and sharing ideas with His Excellency the Governor on how best the traders who are suffering could be assisted. We had a lot of discussions, we shared many ideas and we left it on the table of His Excellency the Governor also to think about it and some of the suggestions that we have given to him on how best interventions could be done.
“Our interventions are going to be short term, that’s in the immediate sense and then secondly, it’s going to be in the medium term and the long term. The medium term and the long term are how best the businesses could be assisted so that they can come back into their usual activities,” he said.
He added that the City Council, State Government, and Chamber of Commerce are jointly assessing possible options to support the affected traders.
