Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, Dr. Chol Deng Thon, has announced plans to train South Sudanese geoscientists and engineers through specialized programs aimed at strengthening local management of the country’s oil industry.
Speaking during a briefing with Vice President James Wani Igga on the Ministry’s technical efforts to increase oil production, Dr. Thon said the initiative is part of a broader plan to establish an oil training center within South Sudan.
The center will prepare local professionals to take over management of the country’s oil fields when current exploration and production sharing agreements expire.
“We also touched on issues to do with how best South Sudanese nationals who are working in the oil industry, the geoscientists and engineers, could be trained,” Dr. Thon told SSBC yesterday.
“We touched on the issue of providing and establishing an oil training centre in the country where South Sudanese are trained to take over the oil fields when the current exploration and production sharing agreements come to an end.”
Dr. Thon added that Vice President Igga instructed him to continue engaging with current foreign partners, including CNPC, Sinovac, and OMDC, as well as the national representative, Nile Petroleum Corporation.
“The goal is to work hand in hand and improve the environment, working together with local communities to ensure sustainability and enhance production conditions,” he said.
The briefing also highlighted the impact of Sudan’s civil war on South Sudan’s oil production, particularly in hindering oil exports.
Vice President Igga urged the Ministry of Petroleum to intensify efforts to boost oil output for export to international markets, emphasizing the role of the oil sector in supporting the growth of the national economy.
