Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Chief Executive Officer of Eye Media is calling for greater support to independent media in South Sudan, saying it plays a critical role in informing the public and shaping national policy.
Stephen Omiri, who also oversees Eye Radio, made the remarks after Eye Radio was awarded Best Media House of the Year by the South Sudan Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture during the 2025 Chamber Quality Awards on Wednesday.
“Without media, a country lives in darkness. Wherever humans exist, there are challenges, diseases, conflicts, and other issues, that need to be reported so policies can be informed. Media acts as a mirror. Just as a mirror lets you see your reflection at home, media lets a society see what is happening around it,” he said.
Omiri said that despite ongoing economic challenges, independent media outlets need sustained support to continue operating and serving the public interest.
He urged companies, business enterprises, UN agencies, and NGOs to partner with and invest in independent media to protect access to credible and timely information.
