Africa-Press – South-Sudan. As South Sudan prepares for the December 2026 general elections, the National Elections Commission has confirmed that voting will be conducted using the 2010 constituency boundaries.
The decision follows an agreement by parties to the Revitalized Peace Agreement to delay the conduct of a national population census ahead of the polls.
Speaking to the media in Juba on monday, the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Professor Abednego Akok, said the move is guided by the National Elections Commission Act of 2012, as amended in 2023.
According to Professor Akok, the law requires the commission to revert to the constituency arrangements used during the 2010 General Elections when a population census has not been conducted.
Under this framework, the commission has declared a total of 102 national geographical constituencies distributed across the country’s 10 states and three administrative areas.
Central Equatoria State has 14 constituencies, Eastern Equatoria State has 11, while Western Equatoria State has 8 constituencies.
Jonglei State, including the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, has 17 constituencies, while Unity State, including the Ruweng Administrative Area, has 7 constituencies.
Upper Nile State has 12 constituencies, Lakes State has 8, and Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has 9 constituencies.
Western Bahr el Ghazal State has 4 constituencies, while Warrap State, including the Abyei Administrative Area, has 12 constituencies.
The commission said detailed names and information about the constituencies will be published on the official NEC website and in the print media, in line with Section 41(1)(g) of the law.
As preparations for the 2026 general elections continue, the NEC has urged the public and stakeholders to rely on official publications to understand their constituencies and follow the electoral process.
